Globe Trekker - Around The World: Pacific Journeys

The Best of Globe Trekker
I have always been curious about the south pacific islands. This dvd covers a pleasant young man traveling to Easter Island,Tahiti, Mangareva and Pitcairn Islands. We learn about the history, the natives, how the inhabitants presently live. The scenery is gorgeous. Part two is the continuing journeys of the same man, as he visits Tonga, Fiji, Norfolk island and New Caledonia. There are lovely unspoiled places on this planet. Good educational video. I hope these places remain undeveloped and unspoiled. For a unique vacation, visit, buy soveniers, take pictures, then leave it as you found it. Delightful dvd.

Deals From The Darkside - Season 1 Episode 9 - Cruel Shoes [HD]

Shameful negotiations
The third show had steve ripping off a store owner. The man did not know what he had. Steve said that it was worth 5000.00. He asked the man how much and he said fifty Steve talked him down to twenty five. He should be ashamed of his deceatful behavior. That was the end of me watching this show. Up until then it was good.

Liked the show but lost respect for the stars.
I quite enjoyed this show until the hypocricy became too ridiculous.. In one episode the stars are outraged and upset at having been sold an axe head from a Mohawk burial mound and go to some lengths to return it to the tribe for burial, and yet in other episodes they gleefully trade in the human remains of torture victims. They seem like nice people until a piece of rock gets more respect from them than a human. The sheer magnitude of the hypocrisy put me off the show. (PS - I'm surprised that any self respecting Wiccan would be buddy buddy with someone who trades in torture victim bones for fun & profit.)

entertaining but...
I like it but the episode progress too slowly. It doesn't seem like there is enough content in each episode. Other than that the cast is likable, the ummmm subject matter is kinda cool. I have watched the first few episodes of season 1, if they don't get better I don't know if I will continue. I may end up removing from watch list

Inspirational!!!
Lori's story is so uplifting and encouraging. She is very inspirational. Her positive outlook and stubborn determination is amazing and will help her get through anything Breast Cancer throws her way. I am so glad Amazon Instant Video made available this episode of 'Say Yes to the Cure: Lori's Fight'!!!

such an inspiration
Lori's story came out just as I was in the process of biopsy to mastectomy. I watched then and clung to every word. However, after mine was behind me, I realized I didn't remember very much of the episode, so 6 mths later, I watched again. I now have it on my Kindle so I can watch any time I need a "friend who understands". Thank you so much for sharing your adventure.

Lightweight Charm And Over-The-Top Performances Highlight This 10-Part British Soap Opera
The new British soap opera "Mr. Selfridge" has a certain frothy charm that will likely appeal to many viewers looking for something a bit more lighthearted from the Masterpiece Classic mantle. Ironically (or strangely) enough, "Mr. Selfridge" is the second series set in the world of retail to arrive on British airwaves this season following the popular "The Paradise." The show, which runs for 10 episodes (not 8 as are currently listed in the product description), is centered around the formation of Selfridge's Department Store in London after the turn of the century. Although the idea of the show is based in fact, I'm not entirely sure I would even call this a historical drama. It adheres more to the lines of a classic soap opera, with an ensemble of characters engaging in the expected romantic subplots and looking resplendent in period finery. The hat budget alone must surely be frightening (as are some of Mrs. Selfridge's hats)! It never digs particularly deep into complex...

Why expect Downton Abby? That would be boring!
Well,I happen to like Mr. Selfridge. The acting is stupendous and the characters are exquisitely dressed.
The sets are top notched. To try and compare this drama to Downton Abby is like trying to compare Are you being served? to Mr. Bean.
Both are delightful alone but use completely different type of Britsh humor.
Even-though the time-frame of Mr.Selfridge and Downton overlap, their stories are completely different.
One can enjoy both,differently.

Historical Drama
I stumbled across this series by accident one Sunday night on ITV and became fascinated. As the reviewers above have discussed in detail there is some unevenness in the story and character development and to be expected the acting and it's hard to know why but despite these flaws - or maybe because of them - since the series is based on a real character and events which are by definition flawed - you are captivated and just want to see and learn more about Mr. Selfridge and his time in London. I became fascinated by his story through this series and desperately wanted to learn more about him. I've now ordered the book the series is based on as well as the book Mr. Selfridge wrote himself in the '30s - "The Romance of Capitalism". I learnt that many things we consider 'normal' in retail today were introduced by Mr. Selfridge - "There are only 'x' more shopping Days 'till Christmas"; the customer is always right; special events to get people into a store; getting shoppers into a store...

A Company Of Heroes

Young men frotunate to have grown old . . .
Perhaps being an Army Brat and remembering the 'stories' of WWII makes this all the more poignant. To listen to these men recount their memories is to recognize the bonds formed during combat. Friendship and trust that has remained through the years and been passed on to their children and grandchildren. Their training began in Georgia and saw them through places that have been immortalized in films . . . 'A Bridge Too Far?' Yes, Operation Market Garden was a reality for these men. Their stories allow one to follow their path from army training, airborne training at Ft. Benning, Georgia, even more training in England, their landing at Normandy, and finally 'back home.' These men should be listened to for they have so much to share. The narrative is well done, includes interviews and photographs. Listen, if you will, and remember!

True Heroes
I really enjoyed the commentary by the soldiers that lived through the war years in combat. I recommend this to all veterans...

Adorable, cute Rom Com
I really enjoyed this Romantic comedy! It was fun but wholesome. If you are looking for a lighthearted family movie that is not too long, this is one you can watch with the whole family. It is in Hebrew and some Spanish with English subtitles. The plot is simple- a new immigrant father who is a soap opera actor is trying to get a part. However, he is told his Hebrew accent is not Israeli, so he convinces his Ulpan teacher to assist. He also has a lovely little girl and a neighbor who watches the girl. The teacher is frum and is hesitant to go along with it because he initially tried to pick her up in the park. She decides to allow the tutoring after he helps her out of a date with an unwanted suiter. I won't ruin the rest for you- just enjoy!

Subspecies: The Blu Ray Collection Volume 1 [Blu-ray]

The vampires of Romania
Ah, vampire B-movie schlock. Not big blockbusters starring Anne Rice vamps or Stephenie Meyer sparklepires, but lower-budget affairs splattered with blood.

One of the best examples of the genre is "Subspecies," a movie series with a genuinely creepy villain and lots of atmosphere. "Subspecies: The Awakening / Bloodstone: Subspecies II / Bloodlust: Subspecies III" brings together the first three volumes of the series, following the vampire Radu's pursuit of a pretty but utterly useless American girl.

"Subspecies: The Awakening" (I don't know why it's called that instead of just "Subspecies") involves three grad students writing their theses in a Romanian village. Their investigations bring them to a ruined castle where vampires were once said to dwell, as well as an encounter with the broodingly handsome Stefan (Michael Watson). Guess what Stefan is!

But it turns out there is still vampiric stuff afoot: the evil, ghoulish Radu (Anders Hove) has returned...

Mel Brooks: Make A Noise (American Masters)

Enlightening And Entertaining, But Brooks' Career Can't Really Be Summed Up In 90 Minutes
Part of the American Masters series, "Mel Brooks: Make A Noise" is certainly a star studded event. The legendary Brooks is a worthy subject for examination and, as a fan, this was a production I was really looking forward to. His influence in the world of popular entertainment is absolutely undeniable. Starting as a television writer in 1949, Brooks has never stopped working in the business he loves. He's won an Oscar, three Grammys, several Emmys and multiple Tonys for a body of work (as writer, director, comedian, and actor) that is far more immense than most people realize. He has achieved the exalted EGOT and was only the eighth person in history to achieve that honor when he picked up Tonys for Broadway's "The Producers" in 2001. Let's just say that with a career that spans eight decades, the man has a lot of stories to tell. And in this presentation, he sits down with his friends to share just a few of them. If I have any complaints about "Mel Brooks: Make A Noise," it...

Great look at an entertainer for the ages
Say what you will about the "Schtick" that Mel Brooks brings to the table. It cannot be denied that he is an all-time great. One of just a few people who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony award. This personal look at Brooks is a wonderful trip down memory lane to take a look at all his classic films and a great insight to all the people who have helped make him a legend. Highly recommended!

Mel Brooks makes more than just noise -- he makes sense!
5 STAR REVIEW OF "MAKE A NOISE" - MEL BROOKS
How I wish this amazing, insightful documentary about the life and career of Mel Brooks was available this semester when I taught "Jew on Screen!" The ancedotes are sprinkled with some painful and carefully edited comments by Brooks himself, a good deal of vintage comedy from most Brooks films and his television stint as a writer for Sid Caesar on "Your Show of Shows." The comments of those with whom he directed and worked and played are truely touching. I will definitely purchase a copy for screening the next time I teach this course. Bravo -- as always -- to "American Masters" on PBS.

Howl's Moving Castle (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

A Wizard Boy Meets a Girl: Poetic Fantasy in Magical World
(In fact 4.5 Stars) Though 'Howl's Moving Castle' ('Hauru-no Ugoku Shiro') may not be Miyazaki's best film, it is still far more enjoyable than many other films, Japanese or American, animated or not. I for one very much enjoyed watching it, and I love the film for its interesting characters and the rich textures of the designs, especially the fantasy world itself where witchcraft and humans' mundane works can be seen side by side. And the titular six-legged castle that really walks among the wilderness is something you never see except in his films.

Miyazaki's new film is based on a book of the same title written by Diana Wynne Jones. The film's story is told from the viewpoint of a 18-year-old girl Sophie, who is working at a milliner's shop every day. But she can hear the sound of bloody battles from the distance, and it is clear that this beautiful country, where witches and wizards live among humans, is going to see another war sooner or later.

But...

A real "Howl"
Not a lot of directors would be brave enough to take on a love story between a girl-turned-old-lady and a wizard missing a vital organ. But Oscar-winning Hayao Miyazaki tackles a new fantasy realm in in "Howl's Moving Castle" -- namely, that of fantasy dowager Diana Wynne Jones.

Sophie (Emily Mortimer) is a plain, unhappy young woman working in a milliner's shop -- lightened only slightly by a mysterious wizard who rescues her one day. But then the evil Witch of the Waste (Lauren Bacall) comes into the shop, and casts a spell on her, turning her into an ancient old lady (Jean Simmons). Sophie ends up wandering into the Moving Castle, a chicken-legged chaos machine, and encountering the sexy if childish wizard Howl (Christian Bale), smart-aleck fire demon Calcifur (Billy Crystal), and preteen apprentice Markl (Josh Hutcherson).

Sophie appoints herself the cleaning lady and starts whipping the castle into shape, trying to deal with Howl's temper tantrums and the...

Trying to decode the story ...
Probably many people find the story confusing. I felt the same thing when I saw it in the theater for the first time! The story seemed arbitrary and I couldn't connect the pieces together. But when I watch it again on the DVD, I realize the movie is probably about one thing: personal freedom.

Howl is a free person. He doesn't has a heart and even his home (which is usually characterized as a stable point in one's life) can move :-) He is disguised as different wizards in different counties, and when Sophie asks him how many identities he has, he said "Enough to guarantee my freedom". When Sophie confronts Suliman, she comments Howl as "selfish and cowardly and unpredictable, but he's straight as an arrow. He only wants to be free." But in Miyazaki's world, nothing is black and white. According to Suliman, Howl's power is too great for a person without heart, and he will eventually becomes a monster (some political figures come to my mind).

Sophie, on the other...

My Neighbor Totoro (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

A Wonderful Antidote to Disney
This is not only one of my favorite childrens films, it's one of my favorite films period. This movie is truly magical. It achieves what Disney movies never do -- a wonderful story without the need to resort to evil villains or wise-cracking side kicks. In fact, two of the things I find most striking and refreshing about My Neighbor Totoro is the use of images rather than dialogue to propel the plot and the slower, almost contemplative, pacing of the action. (This is one children's movie that won't blare from your TV or yammer at your children!) The first time I saw this movie I watched a friend's pirated VHS tape in Japanese. I was instantly mesmerized and was completely able to follow the story, despite the fact that I did not understand a word the characters said.

And don't be put off because it is "japanese animation." This is not your father's japanese animation. The images of the tranquil countryside are sumptuous. Miazaki's attention to the...

Another masterpiece by the world's greatest animator
I have been a huge Miyazaki fan for nearly twenty years now, but I am ashamed to admit that I have only now seen MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO for the first time. The reason is a good one, as reasons go: it was the last important film by Miyazaki that I had not yet seen, and I was saving it for a special occasion. I love seeing again films that I have loved the first time through, but there is always a special magic to seeing a film for the first time. Unfortunately, I now no longer have any Miyazaki films to see that I haven't already seen (at least until he finishes his work-in-progress, which has been given the tentative English title HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE). Fortunately, MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO was worth the weight.

How does this film compare with Miyazaki's finest films? This is a hard question, because he has a large number clustered at the top, all of them excellent. I would be hard pressed to say this was better or worse than any of a number of others. However, each film is...

Totororrific!
This is an excellent childhood story unrivaled by any since "Peter Pan". The plot involves Satsuke, a girl on the cusp of womanhood, moving into the country with her father and younger sister Mei, where she discovers a child's realm of wonder and make-believe running in parallel to the adults' mundane everyday existence. The family's rickety cottage is filled with easily frightened dust bunnies, and deep within the tangle of roots and branches, in a safe hiding place only a child can access, Totoro, a benign forest creature, makes its lair.

The story is a real jewel, simply, elegantly told. The art is of extremely high quality, excellently detailed, bright and clean. The characters are especially well-depicted, complete with expressive body language and realistically animated. In part because of the excellent dub, they are all sympathetic and deeply human, instantly recognizable as real people around us.

Especially evocative is the portrayal of the children's...

A Promise To My Father

Something we should all watch ... never forget!
A well-made documentary recounting the story of Auschwitz survivor Israel Arbeiter. This documentary follows Mr. Arbeiter through a return to his home in Poland and recounts the difficult times he and his family (and many others) suffered through during World War II. A blessing to have and to watch to help us all remember the atrocities suffered during those times and to hope that such will never happen again. Certainly recommended for anyone interested in World War II, the Holocaust, and the human experience of life during the Nazi occupation.

Fine Documentary
This was a very interesting true story about an amazing and courageous Jewish man who was a survivor of the death camps of Nazi Germany. He had made a promise to his father, who was murdered by the Nazis, that if he survived that he would carry on the traditions of their faith.

A Great Reminder....
This movie is a great reminder of the horrific things that have happened in the past to the Jewish people and hopefully this will never happen again to them or any other nationality of people again.
I was raised by people who had numbers tattooed on their arms and my heart went out to them for all their suffering.
As a child, I was always reminded of the fact that they can never take away your education.

The Visitor (Cibrâil)

"I didn't come here for secret sex".
Cibrail (Sinan Hancili) is a Turkish policeman living in Berlin with his girlfriend. He has generally been somewhat repulsed by homosexuals, BUT underneath it all he hides an attraction to men that has obviously never been explored. Not until Marco (Engin Sert) arrives anyway. Marco is his girlfriends cousin who comes for a visit from Rome. There is an instant attraction for Cibrail who begins trying to deal with his inner feelings.

Marco on the other hand doesn't seem attracted in return but perhaps is supposed to be. Not until Cibrail is jogging through a public park and sees Marco receiving anonymous oral sex from another man, does he learn that there might be some promise here for exploring his sexuality with a man he actually sorta knows.

I did not hate this film, however it's really not at all the best choice one can make here. There is a lot of downers on this indie. For starters, the actors portrayed their characters well, but they lack the "feel" for...

Subtle & Understated
Not a whole lot exciting happens in this movie except that the title character comes to terms with his true sexuality. It is well acted with nuance rather than bombast which is refreshing. The nudity at the beginning of the film comes across as gratuitous to me, but otherwise it is very good.

Natural attraction
Wow! What a realistic, natural, highly sensual drama of two men finding they are attracted together. The film is set in Berlin and involves a visitor, a handsome masculine gay man unleashing a latent homosexual undercurrent in an otherwise straight, stoic man. There is awkwardness initially, the barriers are broken down and then the mutual passion and raw sexuality unleashed. Quite a few twists and turns, ecstacies, loss of love and untamable mutual love and hot passion!! This is a gem in the new genre of untypical gay/male-male love stories set within the milleau of a rich cosmopolitan, modern city.

Episode 8

A certifiable MUST VIEW of 1950s London slum
Hot new season 2.Young nurses assist older charitable nuns in East London poverty squalor. The birthing of a new generation. Action comes out of the Nonnatus House, but births take place in the dwellings of the pregnant women, or worse. Less than hospitable for a newborn, but whatever it takes, the nurses are up to the task.

Romance tickles the non-nun nurses adding a sub-plot, as do other medical conditions, and community situations. Episodes have multiple story threads at the same time, like contemporary novels. Viewers quickly learn personalities of regulars. Sometimes events are heartbreaking, sometimes heart warming. Sadness to LOL joy. Births and sometimes death. A lady's 1st child to 25th, literally. Triplets? Father's optional. Secrets and rampant gossip. It's all a part of the lives of these street nurses of the late 1950s. The settings are perfection, but not always idyllic. Many births are shown, with discrete use of camera angles. Delightful fifties Rock-n-roll...

Superb Product of BBC
This is one of the best of all BBC productions since I began watching Masterpiece Theater in the 1970s. Although I had zero previous interest in the work of midwives and what I had envisioned the birth process to be, observing the work of these skillful, brave ladies in the face of life and death decisions has been fascinating and uplifting. The acting and writing have been first rate. Also of interest is the depiction of the first decade of the National Health Service in the UK where many health care services were finally available to people of modest means and the poor. The selfless dedication of the men and women who made this new system work is finally being recognized. -- The main criticism I have is that the dvd for the USA won't be released until late June -- several months after it started airing on PBS.

Can't wait for the return!
I am so excited that CALL THE MIDWIFE has received a second series! My friends and I fell in love with the show from the very first episode. My only problem is that we also watch THE AMAZING race, and both shows air at the same time.
I also find it completely appropriate that CALL THE MIDWIFE will air the first episode of the new season on Easter Sunday. It is a show about birth, life, and death in Poplar, East London after all. I like to focus on the births in the show.
I'm not too worried if I miss series two because I can always catch it through our cable's on demad service. And it's already being released to DVD and blu-ray in mid June? Fantastic! I'll be pre-ordering it as soon as possible.
The Christmas episode literally broke my heart. At the same time, it's one of my favourites, so I'm no less than thrilled to see that it has been added as bonus material for series two.
My high regards for the cast, as well. Jessica Raine won me over from the...

Hey Amazon, I've been an extremely loyal customer of yours since when the company first started. I don't want to watch minute after minute of commercials every time I want to quickly watch something I BOUGHT.

Gone, Gone, Gone [HD]

Season Five is Fantastic!
The Bon Temps gang returns for the fifth season of HBO's "True Blood". I am a colossal fan of the show, having seen every episode since the pilot. Like every show, "True Blood" has had a few ups and downs in terms of writing. Seasons one and two were the show at its best, in my opinion. Season three was a lot of fun, but suffered from cluttered storylines and tonal problems. But, season four -- although it still can't top season one or two -- was a solid return to form (and I can't understand the bashing it regularly receives on here from other fans).

So, how does season five compare? I found this year to be even better than the last; the most compelling reason for this is the fundamental shaking up of all things comfortable and familiar on the show. All of the close relationships have been compromised or changed or they've grown apart: Sookie/Bill/Eric, Sookie/Tara, Pam/Eric, Jason/Hoyt, Tara/Lafayette, etc. This was the year of the Break Up (friendships as well as...

Starting to Lose Interest
I've been a fan of True Blood since the beginning, but this past season has begun to test my loyalty. The seasonal villain is too far-fetched. I know the characters are vampires, but it would be nice to see even one of them maintain a successful relationship. If this keeps up, we're going to need a flow chart just to keep up with who is sleeping with whom and who is now a vampire and who is still human. I still have hopes for the new season, but I'm only cautiously optimistic.

Gotten Out of Hand
I've read the books, and this season is totally out of control. I still like the series though (go Eric!), but I think this season is totally antithetical to the books. On one hand, it's the unexpected that makes for great TV. On the other hand, I wonder if the show is lacking the author's original intent. Without giving too much away, I'm looking forward to season six, but I'm wondering if this season's finale dug the show into a hole that it just can't get out of. No one who's read the books can envision Bill as the bad guy.

Mold!

MOLD Is B-Movie Magic Made By B-Movie Stewards
Ah, the glorious 1980's! The home video market exploded - thanks in large part to the Grindhouse and B-movie exploitation of the mid-to-late 1970's - and audiences were won over with buckets and buckets of blood. Horror schlock - affordably produced and backed with respectable storytelling - enjoyed a renaissance, and fans flocked to their local VHS rental outfits for whatever nuggets of joy they could find. These wonderful films produced a subsequent generation of film fans as well as inseminated a new wave of home-grown filmmakers, and filmdom was never the same again.

Once again, I find you serving as an inspiration for yet another B movie. This one is called MOLD, and I'm thrilled to be in a position to offer a few humble words of reflection on such a curious flick.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of characters and plot. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free,...

An Homage to 80s Horror That Does It Right
The 80s were a truly special decade for me; I was born in '74, so I was a true teen in the 80s and thus got to experience a lot of groundbreaking firsts in the movie industry. The rise of the slasher flick, the splatter-fest obsession and Cold War conspiracy movies were just a few of these milestones. MOLD is a fun throwback to 80s horror that gives homage to splatter and the cruel Cold War mentality. Chocked full of gore (sorta), quirky humor, and outrageous characters, this is one movie that you'll have to see to believe.

First of all, you have to go into this movie with the proper knowledge of what to expect. This is a lower-budget, tongue-in-cheek masterpiece that doesn't take itself very seriously. If you start watching MOLD with any other ideology in mind, you are probably not going to like it.

With that being said, this is one excellent movie that can take you on a helluva ride if you'll let it. The film pulls no punches when it comes to cheekiness,...

Vampires And Other Stereotypes

Not at all what was expected
This movie promises a lot more than it delivers. It needs a lot more plot and reason for being there. I expected a lot more from this one. It has experienced actors and directors, but they did not deliver.

Not ok to add commercials when I can buy the disks without them. Done buying seasons this way, convenient but costly and I don't want commercials.

When I watch a show for free, advertisements are expected. When I pay full retail price for a digital copy, I expect it to be advertisement-free, especially when most of us pay by the data packet.

Gimmicky Guest Stars are standard.
Remember when you were younger and The Simpsons had hearwarming and moving stories? That's been replaced by guest stars and Family Guy-Style hijinx.

Bring back the old Simpsons... when we actually cared about the family.

Nobody's Fool

A Classic and Possibly for the Holidays, Too!
Teaser: An unsung classic of a film, deep, heartwarming, and brilliantly acted. Set between Thanksgiving and New Year in snowy upstate NY, the film could be a part of your holiday film library.

Plot: Paul Newman is Donald Sullivan, a 60-year-old odd-job man in a small, hardscrabble town. His tangled web of relationships with sometime employer Bruce Willis, landlady Jessica Tandy, and a host of colorful locals slowly emerges and it turns out that na'er-do-well Sully actually is a vital component of his community.

Acting: Just superb. Newman is at his best and in her final role, Tandy is brilliant. Willis, Melanie Griffith and Pruitt Taylor Vince is full of pathos as best friend Rub Squeers. The supporting cast is also scintillating. Of special note is an early role for Capote star Philip Seymour Hoffman, as local police bumpkin Werner.

Best Feature: The script-- the Newman-Tandy repartee is great and the Newman-Willis dialogue just crackles...

One of the best films you probably haven't seen.
This is a gem of a movie that never created much of a stir when released. We are accustomed to perfect work from the likes of Paul Newman and Jessica Tandy and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, but director gets pitch-perfect performances from Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith (who was never better).

Nobody's Fool might not be a great film, but I'd argue that it is a perfect film. A film of character, not action, it opens up with quiet assurance and never puts a foot wrong. The writing is exceptionally intelligent, and you could watch it several times just to enjoy the witty banter between small town friends (including friendly enemies, played by Newman and Willis). But ultimately, there is a very serious point to this unpretentious movie. The big climax is nothing much in a way: Newman decides against running off to Hawaii with Melanie Griffith, but that act is an act of heroism and triumph over himself. He comes to realize, after a life of living just for himself, that he has ties of love...

Definitive Newman....Delightful Miss Tandy....Delicious Film
This review refers to the Paramount DVD edition of "Nobody's Fool".....

The irresistable Paul Newman, in a role that was tailor made for him and the always wonderful Jessica Tandy(in her final feature film performance) will steal your heart(as if they haven't already)in the life affirming dramadey, "Nobody's Fool". The rest of the cast are no slouches either. It includes Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith,Josef Summer, Phillip Seymour Hoffman,Dylan Walsh and a performance by youngster Alexander Goodwin that will have you in awe of his extraordinary talent.

Wintry upstate New York is the setting for the story. "Sully"(Newman) is an aging down on his luck, jack of all trades(master of none),regular guy. He just can't seem to get a leg up... figuratively and literally(arthritis is getting the best of him). His life seems to be in a shambles. Abandoning his wife and son years earlier, still trying to eek out a living for himself, constantly seeming to have...

The Lone Ranger: Kemo Sabe - Trusted Friend

An Original TV Hero
I'm old enough to remember watching Lone Ranger episodes when they originally aired as I camped out in front of our black and white console TV. When not watching Lone Ranger, I might have been watching Howdy Doody, Mickey Mouse, Ding Dong School, Superman, or Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney. This DVD is nostalgic for some and a chance to witness television history for others. With commercials omitted the episodes run 22-23 minutes; for old times' sake I would have liked to view a few "brief and important messages" from General Mills.

Having had the opportunity to sample a number of Lone Ranger DVD's, I would recommend this "Kemo Sabe" DVD as one's first purchase. It's a good sampling of stories showing the repeated themes of loyalty, good vs. evil, trust, redemption, and racial harmony. In many of the episodes over the life of the series, a young man makes a foolish mistake and is invariably steered straight by the wise Lone Ranger.

All of the episodes move...

A nostalgic blast into the past with The Lone Ranger and Tonto ...

Not What I Expected
I was looking for one with the first 3 episodes of the very first TV season--1949.
Not much detail given in the add for this one, so I relied on the customer reviews.
The top review must have been tagged to the wrong DVD because it said this one had those 3 episodes. IT DOES NOT!
But eventually I found The Legend Begins which does. Still a good DVD for what it is, it just was not what I was looking for.

Mask Of Dimitrios, The

A Gem of a Film Noir
It wasn't often that Peter Lorre was cast in a hero roll. That alone makes this a memorable movie. Add Sidney Greenstreet to the mix along with Zachary Scott as the very wicked and creepy Dimitrios and you've got a film noir classic. Peter Lorre plays a mystery writer who stumbles upon what he thinks is the ending of a story worth writing about, only to discover that the story isn't really over and that the ending might just include his death.

Peter L. and Sydney G. together again
A mystery writer traveling through Turkey gets caught up in the discovery of a floating corpse said to be that of the infamous Dimitrios.
The story of Dimitrios is told by Sydney Greenstreet among others to writer Peter Lorre through flashbacks . The mystery writer shows great interest and begins to research who Dimitrios was (is) and so begins a remarkable tale.
Zachary Scott plays the suave, slimmy thief and spy for hire. You do need to ask yourself why does Sydney keep showing up? Is the corpse really Dimitrios? A trail to find out begins with Lorre leading the way .
This movie was aka "A coffin for Dimitrios" in book form and translates into a great movie.
This film has just recently been released in dvd format but has bern shown on tv and cable for years. If anybody is interested its been available as vhs for years.
Heres a chance to see the wonderful Peter Lorre wearing the white hat as he did in "The Verdict". Also starring the great Sydney...

Lorre & Greenstreet at their best
This is a solid movie that I have waited for years to appear on DVD. I recently ordered it through the Warner Archive website (Sorry Amazon, but the day I ordered it, I checked, and it was still not cataloged here).

Generally the film quality was excellent. There were a few scenes where the light shifted to a darker image, then back to normal illumination - but this was the cleanest version I have ever scene. So I am pleased.

There was a trailer included. This was in a bit rougher shape, but it had the original Greenstreet narration. Many years ago I saw a trailer with an obvious announcer over-dub with assorted scenes from the movie. Pretty obviously done for either revival theaters or maybe the TV market. It was nice to see in the original style.

And yes, if they ever Blu-Ray it, I'll buy it again!

Really good movie
I am surprised that this movie didn't do better at the box office, but I think it was up against stiff competition at the time. I think it was a really good movie and I sure wouldn't mind seeing it again and owning it. Arnold's still got it! A lot of good action with unlikely heroes....some incredible car chase scenes... good plot, and some good laughs, too. I really wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did, but was pleasantly surprised! Way to go, Arnold!!! Looking forward to your next project!

3 1/2 stars for a fun time with Arnold back in action
I remember weeks ago seeing back-to-back trailers for this film and Sylvester Stallone's "Bullet to the Head." Sly's film looked ridiculous and stupid, not to mention he is after thugs that took his daughter. How original. But then Arnold's movie trailer comes on and it seems pretty clear we are going to get good guys and bad guys in an unlikely shoot-out, but damn if it doesn't look like fun. And damn if it isn't.

Schwarzenegger plays Sheriff Ray Owens, a small town cop on the Arizona-Mexico border. Coming his way from Las Vegas is an escaped cartel boss (Eduardo Noriega) in a souped-up Corvette ZR-1. In a ridiculous and convoluted scenario, this occurs during a transfer supervised by FBI agent John Bannister played by Forest Whitaker in a performance about as lame as his character's management of the transfer. Maybe Whitaker just couldn't understand director Jee-woon Kim's instructions.

The fun really starts when Cortez (Noriega) approaches the border town. You...

Mel Brooks: Make A Noise

If I have any complaints about "Mel Brooks: Make A Noise," it is that...

Great interview and Summary of Mel Brooks
I especially liked the short inserts of all the funny movies Mel Brooks did, They brought back great memories and make you want to watch them again.

April Fool's Day

Wish there were extras...
"April Fool's Day" is yet another one of those holiday themed slasher films that emerged in the wake of the "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th" successes. You know all about them if you follow the genre in any substantive way--movies with names like "Mother's Day," "Graduation Day," "My Bloody Valentine," and "Silent Night, Deadly Night." O.K., the last two don't specifically refer to dates, but it doesn't take a genius to infer that the two films play on Valentine's Day and Christmas. The slasher genre never died out thanks in large part to the billion plus sequels in the "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th" franchises, but their poorer cousins did fade into obscurity until DVD resurrected them. All I can say about that is thank goodness! I'm the first to admit that some of these films fail to rise above mediocrity, but several of them are quite good. "April Fool's Day" definitely falls...

Childish pranks turn into a bloody battle for survival!
Finding an inexpensive copy of this DVD in the Amazon Market Place, I figured 'What the heck?' and picked it up. The movie begins with a familiar theme, a group of college kids on their way to an isolated location (queue foreboding music). Apparently this group was assembled by a common friend to spend the weekend at spacious house on an island whose only access is by ferry, which only runs during the week, so they are basically stuck there until Monday. Through the use of a video camera, we are introduced to the various guests and they seem like your typical group for an 80's horror movie.

After an eventful trip on the Ferry of Death, they arrive on the Island of Death, and are greeted by their Hostess of Death (sorry, I'll cut it out), Muffy St. John, played by Deborah Foreman, probably most recognizable as Julie from the 1983 movie Valley Girl. Muffy leads them to the secluded house, which is more like a mansion, and we find out that this house will be part of her inheritance...

What do you expect?
When the trailers first came out for April Fools Day, they were accompanied by the song "Momma Told Me Not To Come" by Three Dog Night. I wasn't sure if it was a slasher movie, a comedy, a comedy-slasher movie, or even a frat-party movie. All I knew for sure was that Deborah Foreman (Valley Girl)was in it and in the mid-80's I thought she was so hot you could have cast her in a high school driving safety video and I would have paid admission.

Foreman plays Muffy, a rich college kid who invites a bunch of friends to a secluded island owned by her family for a weekend (an April Fools weekend) of fun and pranks. The island is only reachable by ferry and this is the last ferry until monday. An accident happens and the kids are shaken.

Here is where the mind games start. Not many of the young people know each other. All are supposedly friends of Muffy, but most of them don't know each other directly. April fools pranks are played non-stop. Dribble glasses,...

Rustlers Rhapsody

DVD version is incomplete
I am so annoyed that the movie I purchased has been edited and I was not warned on the package. I wish I had seen the June 1, 2004 comments which indicated that this movie is missing a crucial scene. I cannot recommend that you buy this DVD since Paramount has released an incomplete version of the movie.

Why did they alter the movie by deleting the scene where Rex becomes a 'confident heterosexual' ? The punch line to the major joke/tension of the movie is missing in this DVD version.

I cannot recommend that you buy this DVD if you are a fan of the movie. Also, the DVD has no extras or commentary it really is a rush job on their part.

It is a terrible release of a great unknown movie. It still is funny, but not as funny as the original. Contrary to what Amazon says, I am referring to the DVD version of this movie.

Best comedy western of all time
I love Rustler's Rhapsody. It's easily one of Tome Berrenger's best flicks ever. While most people view Blazing Saddles as the best western comic spoof, Rustler's to me blows it away. It's not nearly as raunchy and not quite as stupid.

Every time I watch this movie it leaves my stomach hurting because of all the times I'll laugh. There's a great cast to this movie. Tom Berrenger, Andy Griffith, Sela Ward, and many more people you'll recognize. That's another reason I can't beleive people haven't seen this.

The story is a western spoof. The hero comes to the western town being used and abused by the evil cattle baron. The hero must stop them and overcome some of his own problems. The story also reveals why the bad guys always lose and why the good guys always win.

The movie is great. I guarentee it will make you laugh and laugh hard. If you don't like spoofs then you probaly won't like Rustler's Rhapsody. If you like Blazing Saddles you will definetly love Rhapsody. This is a...

Wonderful Western Satire
"Return with us now to the thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoofbeats of the great hourse Silver, the lone (st)ranger rides again."

For anyone who can remember and quote these words and was raised watching Roy Rogers, Gene Autrey, Hopalong Cassidy, The Cisco Kid and Saturday morning westerns on black and white TV, or listening on the radio, this film is a hoot and a half. I rarely laugh out load at a film at home, but I was constantly laughing at this wonderfully funny film.

What great take offs on the typical western film characters and situations! The lone cowboy in clothes no self respecting cowboy would wear. A fantastic horse names Wildfire, who danced better than Gene Kelly or Fred Astire. The music hall hostess who charged $600 a night, but only talked to her clients (Miss Kitty from "Gunsmoke" maybe?)The town drunk who wants to become the hero's sidekick. Detective De Luca

A Great Period Piece, An Awesome Lead Character, And Four Solid Mysteries Set in War-Torn Italy
As witnessed by the slate of popular procedural programs on network television, we can't get enough of solving crime! I really enjoy having the opportunity to sample International programs, and the hard-edged Italian mystery series "Detective De Luca" deserves to be discovered by a larger worldwide audience. Let me tell you, I loved this four part mini-series from 2008. In a mesmerizing lead performance, Alessandro Prezioni plays Commissario Achille De Luca and he is one tough cookie. Smart, savvy and super sexy, De Luca is the quintessential hard boiled detective. He acts first and asks questions later. He doesn't have time to deal with nonsense, and his uncompromising nature makes him both irresistible and immeasurably frustrating by equal turns. Truthfully, though, this description can aptly be applied to many a detective program. What really distinguishes the four mysteries presented here is the setting. Set in the tumultuous period before, during, and after World War II...

Foreign TV Mystery "Detective De Luca"
There is a lot of action in this series. It has the feel of a premium movie; with plenty of action, pretty girls, and intrigue. Many US productions have degenerated to dialogue only with no substantial filming or action; not this. Enjoyable watching but not for the lazy because you have to pay attention to keep up. I recommend Detective De Luca, the Movies (4) are in Italian with English subtitles and are well done. The action takes place during World War II and is instructive as to Italian culture, politics, and police work.

Oliver's Story

A Must-See Follow-up For "Love Story" Fans
Although not as interesting as "Love Story," this sequel does allow us to see what Oliver's life was like in the years after Jenny's death.

The movie begins with Jenny's funeral and we watch Oliver go through the motions of living, but not really participating in anything except his work. One day, he meets a jogger played by Candice Bergen. They begin a relationship that is pretty much of a bore to all but the most devoted Ryan O'Neal fans (of which I am definitely one!). Ms. Bergen's portrayal is wooden and unappealing, and viewers are probably relieved when she announces she can no longer live with Jenny's ghost. The one good thing her character, Marcy Bonwit Nash, does is take Oliver on a tour of her company's Hong Kong factories. When Oliver sees the poor conditions there, he begins to gain respect for his father and the way the senior Barrett ran his mills.

Oliver's long overdue reunion with his father is touching and we finally get a glimmer of hope at the...

Love after Love Story
Oliver's Story is a must-see sequel for all those Love Story fans who cried when Jenny died. There is serious truth to the fact that only another great love can heal the hurt and loss of an equally great love. There is something to love being the great healer of our hearts. The only problem is that Oliver is still haunted by the ghost of Jenny ... and it is an obstacle to new love. Although widowed he is still trapped by memories which is a barrier to what is available in the land of the living. Another great reason to watch this is there is a reconciliation between Oliver and his father. So the plot has closure on alot of levels. The classically beautiful Candice Bergen is a great opposite against the equally handsome Ryan O'Neal.

A good follow-up
First off, let me say that I can understand why this movie wasn't and still isn't as big as the first one. It doesn't seem to have this certain kind of flow that the first one had which made it special. At times you sit and wonder why did they even bothered. But for those who are hardcore fans of the first film should be able to appreciate the continuation of the story after Jenny's death. We will then begin to realize that the follow-up story isn't so bad afterall. It gives us a chance to see the struggles Oliver has after losing a loved one. It's still a realistic and touching story. I'd highly reccomend it more to the hardcore fans of Love Story.

Parker (+UltraViolet Digital Copy)

NOBODY LIKES CHAOS
Jason Statham plays Parker, a thief and sometimes killer with his own set of ethics. After he is double crossed and left for dead, he decides to go after the clowns that did him wrong. But ZOIKS! The really bad guys have major Chicago gangster connections. He is advised against the action by his silent partner Nick Nolte, whose daughter (Emma Booth) Jason has a relationship.

On the trail of the bad guys, Parker uses Leslie (Jennifer Lopez) a down on her luck, cut throat, high end real estate agent, who also likes to play amateur detective. Parker is resilient as bullets, knives, jumping out of a moving vehicle, and broken ribs only slows him down a step. Classic Statham "performance" for better or worse.

I don't need to mention the no surprise ending. It's a Statham film. The fun part is the tough guy getting us there.

Parental guide: occasional F-bomb. No sex or nudity. Jennifer Lopez bra/panties. Jason and Emma in shower together with discreet camera...

...just keeps on ticking...
Here we have a professional thief with a code of ethics, left for dead by his colleagues (minus his share of the take), and now he's MAD. (It's not the money, it's the principal!) This is a series of heists, each one planned to the nth degree and carried out with cold-blooded precision.

This R-rated thriller only pauses occasionally to introduce another character and maybe have a few laughs. We dash from a state fair (where our hero is a priest!), to Florida where he poses as a wealthy Ecuadorean-born Texan. You're gonna have to trust me on that! There are also some nice scenes with a farm couple and with a hospital patient.

We see:
* Jason Statham ("Safe") Guess who plays the title role? Yup. He is beaten, shot, stabbed, and choked, but this dependable old Timex just keeps on ticking...
* Jennifer Lopez ("The Back-up Plan") seems to be in this just to provide occasional squeals of fear, tears of frustration over her recent divorce and groans of...

Great Action Drama
Love films with Jason Stratham,he does a great job in this film. The story of getting revenge of his former partners in crime who tried to kill him and getting the big score in a jewelry heist with the help of Jennifer Lopez who also does a great job in this film.It has been awhile since we seen Jennifer in a Action drama/Crime drama like her days in "Out of Sight" & "U Turn" that prove Jennifer is a great actor,it was refreshing to see her in this film and back to great acting.Although there is Action in film, there is also drama to help characters develope and you get to feel more of who the characters are, rather than Non Stop Action.Good film and fun to watch.

King Creole

"This is the one movie that makes sense"...enjoy!
"King Creole" what more can be said that hasn't been said already. When this picture was first shown at the Vilma Theater on Belair Rd. in Baltimore City there wasn't an empty seat in the house(the line outside was almost as long as it was for "The Ten Commandments" that premired a short time after King Creole). To start off I'm not sure how many folks know it but this was Elvis's favorite movie that he made. "Crawfish,CCrrraaawwwfffiiissshhhh-gees I got'em",boy if that doesn't make you feel like you are right on the Gulf, sharing plates with Cajuns and of course Creoles! Everything about this movie is first class: the Stars-Presly, Jagger,Mathouw,Jones and of course Vic Marrow as always the perfect Punk. The music is about the best Elvis ever did. I have had the original LP for about 40 years now and still play it for my grandchildren. Dixieland Rock,Trouble, Crawfish, King Creole this is some really good stuff and the fact that this music is backed up by a live Brass Blues Band makes...

Elvis Presley's personal favorite film role
"King Creole" from 1958,(the same year Elvis Presley was inducted into the U.S.Army),is a good drama with a few good musical numbers thrown in. Shot in glorious black&white and produced by Hal Wallis, who produced some of Mr. Presley's biggest hits("Loving You" from 1957,"Blue Hawaii" from 1961,"Girls!Girls! Girls!" from 1962) and directed by Michael Curtiz(the classic "Casablanca"),the story takes place in New Orleans and Elvis stars as Danny Fisher,a disillusioned high school drop out with designs on being a singer.Danny gets a job at the night club "King Creole". The picture features a fine supporting cast including the late, great Walter Matthau, very effective as a sleazy gangster,Carolyn Jones as the gangster's kept woman,Dean Jagger as Danny's father,Vic Morrow as a hoodlum and one of the gangster's henchman and Dolores Hart as Danny's girlfriend,(Ms. Hart after making several movies left acting and...

The King of Elvis flicks
Even the stuffy New York Times praised Elvis Presley's performance in "King Creole," and why not? Everything clicks in this adaptation of Harold Robbins' novel, "A Stone for Danny Fisher." For once, Elvis has a good script, a terrific supporting cast, a first class director, and a role worthy of an actor which he shows himself to be while also singing an album's worth of outstanding songs. He's not the surly creep of "Jailhouse Rock," nor is he the bloated beach boy of most of his 60's movies. He's a good kid whose boredom with school and disappointment with his homelife leads him to explore life on the wrong side of the tracks where he encounters a switchblade flinging Vic Morrow, a sleazy Walter Matthau, and a beautiful but been around Carolyn Jones. Along the way, he also performs brilliant, knockout musical numbers like "New Orleans," "Trouble," "Dixieland Rock," and the amusing "Lover Doll" (no...

Love Love? is a anime series that ran from May 3, 2004 to June 28, 2004
The anime is directed by Takeo Takahashi and the leading character in this anime is one Naoto Ohizumi(voiced by Mamoru Miyano most notably recognized as Light from the series Death Note), and I never thought I would be seeing this licensed for an actual dvd release outside of Japan.

Our story follows one Naoto Ohizumi and his effort to pursue a career in the film industry. He has been given a role as screenwriter to document the principal cast of heroines who are working on a project that is never really explained. It exists more as a vehicle to put him in as many awkward situations as possible, mostly involving fan service to such a degree that it's almost charming in its enjoyment of hitting all the tropes that this standard of anime hopes to accomplish. There is something to be said for not only recognizing genre stereotypes but charging head long into them with reckless regard for any outside...

Beautiful Creatures (Blu-ray+DVD+UltraViolet Combo Pack)

Glad I didn't read the books....because the movie is very good
Personally I can't stand the 1 star "I read the book first and the movie sucked" crowd. Get over it. Movies cannot flow like books and keep a audience's attention, and they certainly cannot do books justice in the time frame given. I guess if you read something and a movie comes out about it either get over the fact it will not do the book justice, or don't go see it. Either way spare us of your negative, biased, and unwarranted reviews.

The story is original, and it is not just another Twilight. I have a wife and daughter who love the Twilight thing and I was forced to watch every one of them against my will. I would take this story over those any day.

So for you who have not read the books.....watch the movie with an open mind and enjoy.

I'm glad i didn't read the book.
I'm a 31 year old avid reader. I loved Harry Potter, Twilight, Mortal Instruments, and Hunger Games all which became movies. Movies never live up to the novels, yet usually I still enjoy seeing how the books are adapted even if the acting is poor or some of my favorite parts have to be cut. Seeing the rating of this movie almost kept me from renting it, but then I read the reviews. Almost all of the bad reviews were people who were disappointed it didn't keep with the original story line. Well I never read the book, so I didn't know what I was missing. I was captivated beginning to end. Yes, I did notice a bad southern accent at the beginning, which I probably wouldn't have noticed if another review hadn't pointed that out. And yes there is a scene where she pours tea and obviously nothing comes out of the pot and the cup is empty. But I only noticed those things because I was looking for them based on other reviews. Within 10 minutes I had forgotten the reviews and didn't notice any...

Enjoyable
As soon as I saw the trailer I bought the book and I fell in love with it. Of course the movie was completely different from the book but the movie was still good. I loved it it was enjoyable and entertaining

Stand Up Guys

3.5 stars... Enjoyable for the performances
"Stand Up Guys" (2013 release; 94 min.) starts with Val (played by Al Pacino) being released from jail after a 28 year stint. He's awaited by his best friend Doc (played by Christopher Walken). We later find out that Val was in jail for the killing of the son of tough guy Claphands, and that Claphands has hired Doc to take out Val by 10 am the next morning. The movie plays out entirely in the 24 hrs. between Val's release from jail and the next morning. During that time we see the two old buddies "liven it up", leading to sometime funny (if at times predictable, as in: Viagra overdose consequences, etc.), and sometimes sentimential moments about the "bad old days" (when they get ready to take on some baddies, they look at each other and start humming: "It's time to kick ass or time to chew gum! but I've run out of gum", ha!).

Several comments: the only plot line that matters in the entire movie is whether at the end Doc takes out Val (I'm not going to tell you how it ends,...

Al Pacino unleashed - don't miss this gem!
I was lucky to attend a screening of ,Stand Up Guys', a thriller-comedy with Al Pacino and Christopher Walken. The movie is hilarious with lots of funny scenes and dialogues. Especially Al Pacino shows method acting at its best. He doesn't play - he is the low rank veteran mobster Val, who - fresh out of prison - wants to make the best of his last hours on earth. Val's only friend Doc is the exact opposite. He looks like a living dead while he is following Val through the night. Doc has a job to do and his job is to kill Val until the next morning. He doesn't have a choice. The mafia don, who wants to see Val dead, has threatened to kill Doc's niece, if Doc spares his friend's life. The world seems to press on Doc's shoulders. Val, on the other hand, knows for whom the bell tolls, but he's a ,Stand Up Guy' and so is his friend.

Director Fisher Stephens arranged extremely funny and dramatic scenes in a quick succession, but his best decision was to step back and let these...

A Stand Up Performance
Three criminals reunite to recapture the glory of their lawless youth, but find their celebrations interrupted when one is put into a difficult position by a vengeful mob boss. Nearly 20 years after refusing to inform on his partner-in-crime, Val (Al Pacino) emerges from prison a free man. Waiting for him at the gate is his old friend Doc (Christopher Walken), who quickly takes him out on the town with the mischievous Hirsh (Alan Arkin) to stir up some trouble. Good movie well acted. I enjoyed watching the forever young Al Pacino.
